A new type of blood pressure measurement technique (High Definition Oscillometry) is now available in our clinic!

In recent years, it has turned out, that the instruments and methods previously used to measure blood pressure (Doppler, standard oscillometry) are not completely reliable in most animal models.

Nowadays, therefore, HDO technology is recognised as the only truly reliable non-invasive blood pressure measurement method, but it is currently still only available in a few practices.

The advantages of this method are a more sensitive sensor in the cuff and a more frequent
sampling rate. During the measurement, cuff pressure values and pulse oscillations can be displayed graphically on a computer, which allows better detection of artifacts (and the false blood pressure values they produce) due to muscle movements or muscle tension. Further conclusions can be drawn from the shape of the pulse curve.

In veterinary medicine, blood pressure measurement has an increasingly important role in the investigation and treatment of many symptoms (fainting, shock, nosebleeds, neurological and coordination disorders, visual problems…) and many diseases (e.g., hyperthyroidism, kidney diseases, Cushing’s disease, diabetes etc.). After diagnosis, follow-up examinations help to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment and to adjust the blood pressure medication appropriately.

The procedure is completely pain-free.

Before your first visit

This will be my first time in your clinic, how can I make an appointment?

The easiest way is to use our online booking system on our website. This applies for the first visit as well. You can also make an appointment by phone, e-mail or in person at the reception.

Only residents of the 7th district can make an appointment?

No! In our clinic, care is not dependent on address, anyone can come to us regardless of where they live!

What documents should I bring with me when I arrive at the clinic?

You do not need any specific documents, but it is recommended to bring your animal’s vaccination booklet with you!

If your pet has already been treated in another clinic or had laboratory tests carried out on it for the disease in question, please bring the results of these tests with you. These documents may save unnecessary repeated examinations!

I can only go the same vet every time?

No, in our booking system you can always choose who you want to make an appointment to!

Will anyone help me hold my pet during examination?

Of course! As it is also important for the wellbeing of the pets how we handle them during certain procedures – to avoid causing fright, pain or excessive stress – we have experienced assistants to help us if necessary.

My pet is particularly stressed in a clinic environment and is therefore often difficult to examine. Can I do anything about it?

If your pet is difficult to handle and to examine, please consult us before your visit! We will assess the difficulty of the situation and advise you on how to safely perform the examination with the least possible stress for your pet!

What does “cat-friendly clinic” mean?

A visit to the vet can often be a stressful experience for cats. That is why we have designed our clinic to minimise disturbing stimuli as much as possible. The separate cat-friendly waiting area and examination room have a comfortable temperature, adequate lighting and ventilation, and pheromone vaporisation to keep cats calm. The examination is carried out carefully, paying attention to the cat’s reactions, in a specially designed examination room.

Administration

How are pet passports issued and validated?

When issuing a passport, we will first check the data to be recorded in the passport, and then check the microchip of your pet. If your pet does not already have a microchip, we will implant one, as this is a requirement for the passport to be issued. We will then issue the passport – if necessary – within half an hour. The passport is valid for travel within the European Union.

It is important to note that a valid rabies vaccination is required for travel and therefore for the passport as well! If your pet does not have this vaccination or if his/her previous rabies vaccination has expired, the new vaccination will only become valid on the 21st day after the date of administration and he/she will be able to travel legally from that date!

How can I change the microchip data?

If you wish to change the microchip data – if the owner changes – you must present a contract of sale to modify the data!

In other cases, i.e. if the owner has not changed and only the contact details need to be updated, the owner can request this at any time in our clinic, after proving his/her identity.

Important information on examinations, surgical procedures involving sedation or general anaesthesia

Can I book an appointment for a surgical procedure online?

No! It is not possible to book an appointment online for procedures involving anaesthesia and sedation, as it is essential to discuss the details in person before choosing a date!

We recommend that you always book a presurgical examination before the surgery, where we can discuss the details of the procedure, carry out the necessary tests and also arrange the appointment!

Is there anything I should do before my pet is anaesthetised?

The previous evening: animals also need to fast before procedures involving sedation or general anaesthesia to prevent certain complications (aspiration, aspiration pneumonia, suffocation…). The usual evening feedings can still take place, but from midnight onwards they must not be given any food or water! On hot, summer days, it is enough to take the water away from your pet only 1-2 hours before arriving at the clinic.

Outdoor cats must be kept indoors overnight! This is necessary to make sure that they don’t find extra, hidden food anywhere outside. (And also to prevent them from using their sixth sense to escape before leaving in the morning.)

The morning of the surgery: for dogs, it is recommended to take a short walk before arrival to give them a chance to eliminate. If your pet is currently on medication, they may be given their usual morning dose unless otherwise advised by your treating vet. These should be given without food! If the administration of medication requires food specifically, please always ask for our advice on how to proceed in such situations.

Important! Do not let your pet drink from the drinker in the yard of the clinic before an anaesthetic procedure, as it is necessary to arrive with a completely empty stomach!

My pet is young/has never been ill before/has already been anaesthetised before, so the anaesthesia is not risky at all, is it?

It is very important to note that any procedure where the animal is given sedative or anaesthetic drugs always involves a minimal risk and is never a routine procedure. Our job is to reduce these risks to a minimum and thus avoid complications. Particularly in sick animals, these risk factors can naturally increase. The type and severity of complications can vary widely from mild to severe.

Mild complications include post-operative emesis (vomiting), lethargy or a temporary decrease in body temperature.

More serious risks may include gastric regurgitation and subsequent aspiration pneumonia, circulatory problems, shock, or anaphylactic reactions. Although the risk of these complications can never be completely eliminated, they can be minimised. Presurgical examinations reduce the chances of complications, and the use of modern patient monitoring and anaesthesia equipment with an experienced team allows full control of your pet from the beginning of anaesthesia until wake-up.

My pet has recently been anaesthetised. Can this be a problem?

During the treatment of our pets, it is sometimes inevitable to sedate/anaesthetise them several times in a row. However, if the animal has fully recovered from the previous procedure, this should not be a problem. Each sedation/anaesthesia is independent, and the risks do not add up. In some cases, it is better to have several short anaesthesia sessions for your pet rather than one long one. This is because the risk of anaesthesia is usually higher the longer it lasts.

My pet is too old to be anaesthetised.

Studies have shown that anaesthesia of cats and dogs over 11 years of age carries a slightly higher risk than younger patients. However, this doesn’t mean that animals over 11 years old shouldn’t be anaesthetised, just think how some older animals look and behave like puppies! The most important thing to consider is what you can gain from the procedure you are about to undertake and how much it will contribute to the health of your pet compared to the risks associated with anaesthesia.

In many cases, this is not a decision for the owner alone to make, but one that should be considered and decided in consultation with us, the veterinarians. The greater risk is often due to the fact that, with age, there may be a number of diseases going on inside the animal that we were not previously aware of. In order to detect these hidden diseases, the older the animal, the more detailed the examination we recommend, which may include a detailed physical examination and blood work, echocardiography, ECG, blood pressure measurement and chest X-ray depending on the symptoms. Performing these examinations will provide us with the right amount of information to carry out our procedures as safely as possible.

What is the difference between sedation and anaesthesia?

In our clinic, patients may undergo a number of procedures for diagnosis or treatment. In order to carry out these procedures safely and with as little stress as possible for the animal, sedation or general anaesthesia is often inevitable. Prior to most of these procedures, we insert an intravenous catheter into one leg of the animal, which allows us to administer additional medication or fluids if necessary.

If our patient needs a simpler, short diagnostic procedure that requires immobilisation but does not involve pain, such as X-rays, ultrasound or otoscopic ear examinations, we use sedation. Sedated animals are often still aware of their surroundings but are much more relaxed.
If your pet needs surgery, we will perform it under general anaesthesia, not sedation. In many cases, it is better to use general anaesthesia, as this is often safer than sedation, which the outside observer may find easier and often safer. This is because general anaesthesia allows us to monitor and control anaesthesia in more detail.

After a thorough physical examination, the anaesthesia begins with the insertion of an intravenous catheter through which certain anaesthetics are administered. Our patients’ sleep is supported by a modern anaesthesia/ventilator machine for each of our soft surgery procedures, so after the induction with intravenous anaesthetics, an endotracheal tube is passed down into the upper airway to ensure the flow of free oxygen and anaesthetic gas to maintain the patient’s sleep.

This applies to all our dental procedures as well – whether it’s a simple ultrasonic dental scaling or an oral surgery!

Occasionally, the endotracheal tube inserted into the airway may cause some irritation, which may present as a mild cough for 1-2 days after the procedure.

Can my pet have any pain after the procedure?

Some procedures, especially surgeries, inevitably cause a degree of discomfort and pain. Although these procedures are performed in the hope of long-term recovery, it is important to reduce the pain they cause immediately. Therefore, we use a variety of techniques and medications to minimise the pain that your pet may experience. Often the best results are achieved by using several different analgesics (painkillers) at the same time.

The specific pain management protocol depends on the procedure itself and the pet. Pain relief begins before any procedure is initiated, with each animal receiving a ‘pre-treatment’ prior to general anaesthesia.
Pre-operative analgesic medications help to reduce the intensity of post-operative pain.

What happens with my pet during general anaesthesia?

During anaesthesia, the animal is under continuous monitoring, using modern devices for all our anaesthetised patients, which allow us to check heart rate, cardiac rhythm, respiratory rate, exhaled air carbon dioxide levels, blood oxygen levels, blood pressure, concentration of anaesthetic gas inhalation and exhalation, body temperature, etc. Continuous monitoring of these parameters gives us the opportunity to detect any complications as soon as possible and to react to them immediately. The recovery from the anaesthesia can also carry a number of risks, so we monitor the animal closely until it has fully regained its normal consciousness.

What should I do if my pet comes home after a procedure where he/she has been given an anaesthetic?

When your pet is released from our clinic, you will first receive a detailed report on what happened there and what you need to do in the upcoming days. If it is an ambulatory procedure, so you can go home on the day of the procedure, you should expect that your pet will be even quieter and sleepier than usual that day. During this period, it is important to provide a warm and quiet place for your pet to rest without disturbance. We recommend that cats (if they are outdoor cats) stay indoors overnight, and dogs should only go for shorter walks.

On the day of surgery, your pet can usually have his/her dinner unless otherwise indicated by your vet! Vomiting may still occur in the first 24 hours after surgery but is uncommon. Stitches are usually removed 10-14 days after surgery.
